Many SME owners will miss Christmas Day this year. New research by Ultimate Finance has found that 24% of small medium business owners will work on Christmas Day this year. Other research has found that one third of SME owners say that the festive period is a vital time for business growth.
Many people rave about the perks of being a business owner, like the autonomy and control of it. However, research seems to show that the nation’s business owners are pushing themselves to the limit to try to get results.
Other facts that the research found included:
90% of SME owners say that their job has a negative impact on their relationships and family life.
Nearly half have missed a special occasion
The usual definition of SMEs is any business with fewer than 250 employees. There were 5.7 million SMEs in the UK in 2018, which was over 99% of all businesses.
Robert Stewarts, leading business psychologist, said of the research:
“Taking time out to spend with friends and family is an important part of life. It can be restorative and help with mental wellbeing. I find that business leaders often struggle to strike this work / life balance, sometimes feeling guilty about ‘downtime’ despite very much wanting to more spend time with loved ones. Not getting that time off can be extremely detrimental, and I welcome this research which shows the true extent of the problem which we can work together as a single business community to tackle.”
Know your limit
Business owners need to look after their own mental health as to do otherwise can lead to burnout and further mental health issues.
Knowing the limit is important and the festive time can be a good time to evaluate whether spending excessive time in work, as a business owner, is worth it in the long run.
